What’s in your dental floss? The risk of PFA’s- “Forever Chemical”

Highlights of this BURST tv segment:
What are PFAs are, where they’re found and why we should all be taking notes as dental professionals and consumers of oral care products?

PFAs also known as “forever chemicals” are a group of chemicals called per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and are found in many products we use everyday.
Studies show they’re found in 98% of Americans and have harmful health effects which include some cancers.

How many times has your dental hygienist recommended you floss daily? Of course flossing is important to remove daily plaque, reduce periodontal disease and caries risk and increase your lifetime of a healthy smile.

In recent years, the dental community started looking closely at the safety of dental Floss, specifically coated (wax) floss. After a study in 2019, it showed PFAs were found in several types of coated floss but ADA states there is not enough evidence to conclusively say they are not safe.

Until more research is done to lead manufacturers to reformulate all coated floss to PFA free, we need to educate our patients with which Floss is PFA free to help our patients stay safe by reducing the possibility of PFAs causing toxicity with long term use.
