What is a Dental Dam? How it Works?

The Dental Dam is a thin, flexible, 6-inch square sheet (which you can find in various colors), usually latex or nitrile, that isolates the operative site. Meaning, it keeps your tongue and saliva out of the way during the procedure while also protecting your airway.

This little gadget is the most critical safety measure we use here at Innovative Endodontics during your treatment. Dr. Estes has never done a root canal without one and never will. It’s very important to keep the patient safe.

Also known as Rubber Dam, they are the standard care in root canal treatment. Although it looks strange, it’s actually pretty simple to put on.
The majority of the time will be sitting outside of your face. Your tooth will poke through the small hole, and it will make a little sound when it gets into place. Once the dental dam is placed, it’s silent and comfortable.
It enables your doctor to see the best they can during the procedure.

We know it might be a little intimidating at first, but we promise you it is easy to put it on, easy to remove, and comfortable during treatment.

Here, at Innovative Endodontics, we always use a dental dam for patients’ safety. We will show you when you get here and explain what to expect.
It’s just a measure to make sure you have the best root canal and be safe along the way.
