Ibuprofen After Wisdom Tooth Surgery: Opioid-Free Pain Management | Penn Precision Medicine

Opioids prescribed for pain are an established gateway for some individuals to addiction. We need alternative therapeutic options, including non-addictive choices as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs, ibuprofen) to help with pain management. A team led by Tilo Grosser, MD, is working to identify who will get enough relief from ibuprofen rather than opioids—before medications are even prescribed—following wisdom tooth extraction. For many young adults, this dental surgery is the first time they are prescribed opioids to manage pain. The interdisciplinary team will take a personalized approach to make changes to pain medication prescribing practices to reduce unnecessary orders of highly addictive pain killers. They plan to launch a clinical trial to look for genetic and epigenetic markers of individual inflammation and response to medications for post-surgery pain.
