How do dentist check for a high filling? – Dr. Sangeeta Honnur

Fillings are one of the most common procedures that is carried out daily in our dental office. Fillings can be small, moderate, to medium large which are done and they can be done with or without anesthesia generally. So especially when moderate to large fillings are done under anesthesia and after the filling is completed the dentist uses a paper to check how the bite is and depending on the marks that you get on the tooth and comparing it with the other teeth, the filling is adjusted and also the patient tell s you if the filling feels high. If it doesn’t feel normal like the other teeth, then it is adjusted. But because of the anesthesia or something new that is done, many at times the patients is not able to tell or not able to bite correctly on the paper for the dentist to see that. But once you go home and a few hours go by, the filling doesn’t seem right in terms of biting. So it is very important for the patients should come as early as possible to get that filling adjusted. It just takes a few moments of the dentist to adjust that filling especially when they can bite very normally with that filling for that to be corrected. Because without that being corrected if you think it is going to go away, it might not just go away. There could be other changes that happen in the tooth. So just by biting on that one tooth, there is a ligament around the tooth which gets inflamed with that high bite. That itself can cause nerve injury to the nerve inside. So that nerve injury might end up in the tooth needing root canal just because the small correction could have prevented that. There could be a muscle pain that could be developed form the high filling. There can be joint pain that can start because of the filling. The bite not being right and the occlusion not being right there. So it is very important for the filling to be adjusted as soon as possible.
